SPOT

Situation: This semester's spot theme was "finding a spot theme"

Outlook: Besides being incredibly unorigional and lame, I kept thinking of a much more appropriate SPOT theme: Discretion. Theres always been some discrepancy as to whether SPOT is a talent show or a comedy show. However, if an act has neither talent or humor, dont waste our time by making a longer show filled with acts that waste time.

The math poem was interesting im sure to math majors but displayed neither talent nor humor. The song about the hick girl who just 'caint say no was talented in the broad sense of the word, but lacked humor and enough talent to use up the 10 minutes it took (some of which was setting up, not just the act)

This SPOT was one of the best in the four years i've been here but three hours was too long, especially considering many people waited an extra half hour or so in the lobby waiting to get in. Next year, try and show some discretion

While SPOT for the most part wasn't funny there were a few high lights for me including Eric and Jimmy's live act, the video of the Houghton male, Hairspray, and of course the band. However, what most disturbed me was how at least two of the acts broke SPOT policy.
Try not to make the sacred appear common or profane. Eric and Jimmy butchered this, but at least did it in such a way that everyone laughed after they realized it was heresy.

As for the act with the gangsters dancing against drugs the following come to mind:
Try not to use material that will embarrass pure-minded listeners. Strive to develop material that will permit everyone to join in the laughter. And In humor as in all other activities of life do all to the glory of God.

Maybe I just didn't understand what was going on, or at least that's what I attributed my lack of laughter to at first until they pretended to have that boy ate by other boys (ie animals) and then pretended to eat two dead bodies. Wow. What do you even say to that? I was about ready to leave. It was already late, and that sort of pushed me over the edge. However, Hairspray, after that act, was at least a redeeming moment.

I agree. Some of the SPOT 'acts' were simply unnecessary and undignified. The band playing while two girls acted drunk/high and paraded around in spandex sequins was not humorous, did not show talent, and was quite disgusting. The rappers "eating" each other was quite disgusting as well. I too wanted to leave after about the halfway point. Some of the acts were good, but there were too many questionable ones for the 3 hour commitment.
